Anyone worked on reverse vmware migration before? long story short, we're looking to shift three servers off a vmware enclosure to standalone physical machines. Been reading up on some whitepapers, but they seem to describ e what's essentially building a SISprep image and that worries me, as traditionally sisprep reseals the machine you're imaging...and in this case one of them is the farkin' DC.

Anyone worked with this before? any suggestions? best practises? Bueller?

EDIT: We ended up using WBS to take a snapshot, then replicated that back out to the existing hardware. Surprisngly painless, stable servers resulted.

windoze, eh? I'd just do a full system backup, install a clean os on the physical machine, load it up with the right drivers and restore the backup on top

as for the DC, who's to stop you from bringing up a secondary controller, syncing it to the first one, and switching the FSMO roles to it?

The fact that, terrifyingly, there is no secondary DC >.<

(I know, I know, I keep saying "FUCKIN' SET UP ONE BEFORE YOU FUCK THE PRIMARY" but sane voice of reason.)

the question is why don't you just set one up? it's a matter of installing windows and running dcpromo - 1 hour of work
